Layering Secrets: How to Take your Kaftans from Summer in to Winter Now!
26 May 2010
The secret to taking a summer kaftan into winter is...'layering'. Layering Over and Under. When you layer, the result should be a cohesive look with all the pieces you're working in harmony.
Keep these 3 things in mind and you won't go wrong:
- 1: Line
- 2: Length &
- 3: Texture
1: Line:- Every garment has hems; necklines, sleeves, bottoms. Each hem creates a 'line'. When you layer it's important that you think about the direction of those lines. A bit like drawing. There are many important lines to consider, but to keep life simple, the most important line to focus on is the Neckline.
- Necklines: With out doubt, the most reliable, fail safe combo is a deep 'V' neckline Over and a mid/low scoop neckline Under. So when buying fine knits and jerseys to layer under, go for mid to low scoops. For jumpers, cardigans and over layers, reach for 'V's. Top Tip: For the best result, you want to see the scoop nestling in towards the bottom of the 'V'.
2: Length:- Length works hand in hand with line.
- Focus on sleeves and bottom hems
- Just a little 'peep' works best. Again, there are millions of combos but the most important one to remember is the 'Peep'. Top Tip: The Under layer should be just a little longer than the Over layer and look as if it's 'peeping' out from behind.
- Finish your lengths (bottom hems) at a narrow point. Layers should finish at a 'narrow' point - ankles, knees, wrists (a bit above is best), waist. Pick your best narrowest areas and focus on them.
- Match lengths. Keep it simple. Long with long, short with short. Wear your Over layers loose or belt them in at your narrowest point, it doesn't matter. The principle is still the same.
Top Tip: If you are curvy and your waist is your narrowest point go short over long. Think of the classic cinched in suit. Go short to the waist with a jacket or cardigan over long pants (to the ankle).
3: Texture:-
- Less is more: fine layers Under...thicker, more textured fabrics Over.
- Winter often means black, grey and cream. If you must wear all the one colour, then breaking it up subtly with a couple of textures is a great way to create interest and instant style.
Top Tip Textures create lines. Too many textures means too many lines. That will look messy and so will you! Think of your dog's breakfast.
