How to Stay Stylish while you Save
2 April 2009

We're all doing it...pulling our horns and heads in, tightening belts (and what ever other 'phrases' there are out there), to save a little more.
It's mostly about making what we have stretch that bit further. So here are my tips for doing just that, without having to compromise on one very important thing...how great you look!
Our confidence needs to shine not fade, in times like these, so try some of these top tips and see how you go:
1. Wear what you have for longer - take summer fashion staples into winter. Pip's written a great article on this called 'Work that Kaftan' and it show's you how to do just that. She does it using a beach dress and another great resortwear staple, The Perfect White Shirt
2. Facelift your Favourites - your favourites are probably just that for a very good reason...they work well for you. But if they're looking a bit worse for wear:
- take them to a tailor to be repaired
- replace tired old buttons with fresh ones. It can completel transform a garment
3. Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise!!! - We call accessories the 'antioxidants of the fashion world' because they're a small investment, small in size and can really pack a huge punch and transform a look. For under $20 you could easily find a great new:
- belt - try a 'skinny' belt in a fresh new bright for an instant wardrobe pick me up
- scarf - the long narrower versions are very versatile; tie them in different ways, over, under or around for different looks (and keeping warm)
- Tights - textured for a change are fabulous. It's not always about colour and print, mixing textures is a great way to change a look especially if you want to keep your colour palette monotoned. If you're game, 80's glam colours are in for a more dramatic change.
- Jewellery - gorgeous wide cuffs, bangles, necklaces and earrings. The ultimate piece, a fun bold ring. Diva has great options.
4. The Right Colour - 'plum' is the new black this winter and thankfully, it's a colour that most of us can wear. But all colours are NOT your best colours. Wearing the RIGHT colours for your personal palette will instantly make you look fantastic and give you an instant pick me up. Take a look at my article on Colour Basics to get you started if you're not sure. Take your time, experiment and have fun with finding your best colours this season...you won't look back!
5. Wear Basics in Different Ways - that might seem obvious and 'basic' in itself, but it's easy to just 'keep on keeping on' wearing the same clothes, in the same way. Step back, read a few magazines, get inspired and experiment! We do it all the time in See It On, showing you how to take your beachwear from 'beach to bar'. Take a look at How to Wear the Perfect White Shirt 4 ways to get more clues. This is where tips 1-4 come together...bring your basics to life and create a new look wearing things a little differently.
Creating new looks can be so much fun. It's even more fun with your mates. Get a few girls together and have a night in, experimenting with your favourites, colour and swapping accessories...you'll be amazed at what you can come up with!
Enjoy!
