October is Breast Cancer Awareness month - here's how to get involved and help.
3 October 2008

Just before my aunty died of breast cancer, she sent out a specific instruction not to buy flowers for her funeral, but make a donation to breast cancer research instead. That was my biggest breast cancer moment. I'm sure you have yours.
It can be hard to find a place to start when you want to help. There are heaps of ways but here are a few that I think will not only make a direct difference, they will be fun too.
- Get on board for a 'Girls Night In'
- Make a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation or The Cancer Council of Australia
- Shop with us in October and we will donate 10% to the NBCF
- Attend a pink ribbon day breakfast around the 27th
- Buy 'a Pocketfull of Sequins'
- Look after you!
Girls Night In:
Is a fantastic fund raiser co-ordinated by The Cancer Council of Australia. Anyone can organise their own girls night in or you can attend one organised by it's sponsors such as Curves.
The www.girlsnightin.com.au is fantastic and explains how to do your own. Get a few mates together, have a drink, watch a movie, go out for dinner...just do what you do anyway and put money in the pot for the cancer council. How easy is that?!!
There are major sponsors of the Girls Night In so you may already be a part of their world anyway. Just attend their 'night' and make your difference. We are Curves crazy at Sequins & Sand so we will be attending our local Curves gym 'night in' to get involved...stay tuned for how we all helped to raise money and awareness.
Make a Donation:
Can't get the night off? Then just log onto the National Breast Cancer Foundation's website www.nbcf.org.au and make a donation. You can also do the same at The Australian Cancer Council's website too www.cancer.org.au.
Shop with us:
Shop at Sequins & Sand in October and we will donate 10% of all sales to The National Breast Cancer Fund.
Pink Ribbon Day:
The 27th of October is Pink Ribbon Day. A NBCF initiative that thankfully, gets heaps of attention and is therefore, very easy to get involved with. Buy a ribbon but go that bit further and attend a breakfast (sometimes is brunch or supper) in your area. On the Pink Ribbon Day Breakfast website, you will be able to just put your post code in and find an event that takes your fancy. Drop them a line or just drop in on the day...you will be welcomed with open arms. Many of those raising money have targets of around $200 so there are heaps out there doing their bit.
Buy a Pocketfull of Sequins:
I found this whilst on the NBCF website. It struck a chord funnily enough. Just $10 and you buy directly from the NBCF shop.
Look After You!
It may be obvious, but this is where we are all so very slack...everyone else comes first, right? Guilty of this myself, I'm writing this snippet of advice for me too! Here are tips from the experts on how to be breast savvy and look after yourself. Attached is a handy one-pager from The Cancer Council Australia. Take 1 minute to read it and then start putting it into practice!
Well I hope that gets you all motivated. I certainly am...I've learned so much putting this together.
Send me an email about what you have planned to do or what you did and we'll spread the word.
Easier still, just click on the 'Share' buttons below to spread this blog about, raising awareness as you go.
Until next time.
