Summer Style: What Kaftan to Wear When You're a Pear.
14 June 2008

I had an absolutely fabulous time today with a friend of mine, styling her gorgeous 'perfect pear' body. Having just received samples for our new summer range (woo hoo!), I am most eager to see what is going to look best (and shocking) on as many body types as possible.
Now I regard myself as a pear, having 'saddle bag' thighs as the widest part of my anatomy. I naively made the assumption that we pears would share ALL the same challenges and therefore reach for the same clothes on the rack - to an extent...yes, but not always! Buerre bosch, packham, corellas and duchess - pears come in all varieties, each having their own qualities. How could I have missed that?
No wonder we find it extraordinaryily difficult to find clothes that make us look fab!
That been said, a pear is still a pear and the most common feature that binds us together is our narrow tops, bigger bottoms and thighs.
The kaftan style that is 'pearfect' is one that
fits more firmly across your bust and then 'falls' from just under the bust line. It's really important that you don't drown your bust!
Kaftans with:
- a 'smocked top' - rows of elasticaed stiching that ends just under the bust. It's vital that the smocking does not extend beyond that down your waist. As lovely that it is, it will start to puff all in the wrong areas...your hips/thighs and that is just disastrous, so watch that. Look out for 'Bermuda' in our new range. If you are on our newsletter mailing list, then you'll get to see her first!
- a gentle 'A' line - where the top is narrower and the fullness starts to gently kick in just under your bustline. Amanda does this. Just be careful that she's not too generous in the top for you. A small Amanda is a generous 10-12 so if you are small busted, she may not work as well on you. What she does do well is give your thighs coverage...to just above the knee if you are a shorter pear, creeping up a bit, the taller you are. I'm 165cm and she sits 10cm or so above my knee. 'J' comes in at about 160cm and Amanda was about 3cm above her knee.
- an classic 'empire' line - a draw string under the bust is very versatile as it can bring you in as much as you need it to. Sam does this very well and so does Jewel. Both have the added bonus of being knee length. Both are smaller in sizing so if you are usually say an 8-10, that is a size 1. Mia does too but the draw string sits a little lower so that would be better for girls with a bit more of a bust/ slightly fuller on top so that it raises that seam line. Mia is great for girls who's thighs are not as heavy to the knee.
Pear you have it! Three (3) basic styles, each with the same fit characteristics of having a firmer bust fit and then gently falling away from there.
If your thighs are heavier, then make sure you go for styles that are knee length to accentuate your narrowest part...if not, liberate them to just under that point that they start to take on a life of their own.
So Buerre bosch, packham, corellas or duchess...what ever variety you are, celebrate being wondrously sweet and well, just 'pearfect'!
Until next time.
Ciao bellas.
