Summer Style: Looking fabulous is all in the fit. Here's some real fit for thought.
12 March 2008

I was at a fashion trade fair last weekend with 'the girls'...such fun! I'm thrilled to report that next summer is looking great and we'll be bringing you a fabulous range of kaftans and summerwear to really help you shine.
One thing that stood out for me though, was the ever-present 'no idea' factor that sadly so many manufacturers/suppliers seem to possess. You can imagine how overwhelmed with emotion I was when I actually found someone who did!
This clever woman actually understood the fabulous female form, with it's lumps and bumps, bits and bobs and designed a range that will help to create a great fit for most women. Having been a 'fit model' (aka the human manequin) for years, has seen it all, worn it all and told them all what works, what doesn't and what brings out the best in we women.
Possessing a great sense of style and eye for colour completes Louise's package. And yes...we will certainly be bringing you her fabulous range next summer so watch this website!
Now it's fair to say that you will never find a garment that will look great on everyone. But, I do think there are a few classic cuts that work for many to help create a wondrous fit. Comfy?...Excited?...here they are:
Tops:
- Here's the scoop - an open scoop neckline is most flattering. Tragically, a higher scoop will literally create a not so flattering 'boxed' effect unless you are very slender and flat chested. And equally well, if you are a bit 'bony' then don't go so wide and deep with the scoop...keep it higher. It's all about proportion really.
- 'V' for me - notice how most kaftans are a 'v' neck? There is a very good reason for this...it works. The deeper 'v' the better as far as I'm concerned. Summer is the perfect time to feel and look a bit sexy. Keep the width proportional...the smaller you are the narrower the 'V' and if you have great 'assets' work them with a wider one and let them breathe!
TRAP: the neckline alone won't save you. You MUST wear the right supportive bra or swimwear under at all times to absolutely look your best. Don't come whining to me when it all falls flat (so to speak) because I'll be checking under before I bother with on top!
Pants:
Golden rule with pants is to skim not cling...I don't care how gorgeous you think you are!
- Full length and a real full length pant, will win hands down every time...yep...even over the much loved 3/4 that we Aussie girls are so fond of. Why? because they lengthen our pins, not show them off and a good long set of pins are to die for.
- Wide leg - even better if they have a wide waist band (high on the hip very nice indeed) and then start to drape from there as this will guarantee a skim not cling. Often referred to as a Palazzo Pant.
- White - will go with everything summer has to offer and always look stylish. This season, a neutral caramel will also serve you well.
Skirts:
- A-line every time, but not a wide 'A' at the base...gently does it. Why? Same argument as the pants, it skims the hips and then gently widens. But again...keep it in proportion, narrower is better when you are smaller (and that includes your bum). If you love cotton fabrics then this rule is fab.
- A little Swish - a skirt that sits on the hip and gently falls from there is so flattering, especially if it's made from a fabric with body like a modal or as is becoming all the rage, bamboo!
- Length - this is a toughy...to the knee for me. If you have great legs then by all means show them off, particularly with a summer tan! But PLEASE, I beg you, don't go mini if your legs are more like maxi, it will only end in tears.
Dress:
- Wrap - without a doubt, this is the style that will work on most figures and do them justice. Just ask Diane von Furstenburge. She's made a tidy sum for herself on this little number alone! And it's fine to go firmer in the body and let the skirt gently fall away from the hips. Don't get too carried away and over tighten at the waist, you don't want to look like you've been folded in 2.
Shorts:
For me, the toughest item in a summer wardrobe, even scarier than swimwear!
For this one, I'm truly stumped...yep, literally. I have quads of steel (years of playing squash darlings) and legs that shall we say, are vertically challenged. So for me and just above the knee works to cover them over but not too long for fear of making my legs seem shorter.
If I had to choose one it would be:
- Knee length - whether just above, on or just below is really one for you to judge given your 'features'. This length looks fantastic with any length top, especially one a similar length and for me, makes them very versatile.
My final word on shorts is that 'floppy' is not necessarily flattering, go for a more tailored look. Floppy is fine when you are hanging out the washing or going for a jog but really, the stylish option is tailored.
Think I've covered most bases and am now exhausted!
Enjoy flurting with your fit.
Until next time.
